lucky day…we almost caught on fire because of Moxi cable box

I was out tonight doing some work with one of my business partners…decided at the last minute to catch Sportscenter..something smelled weird in the basement and I couldn’t place it. Sat down and turned on the tv…still could smell something but couldn’t trace it down. I tried the utility room, the computers (it was a burnt smell), the printer, the closet but I couldn’t pinpoint it.

About 5 minutes in the cable box randomly rebooted. So I walked over to take a look…and realized that is where the smell was coming from. I quickly unplugged it and took it out…I almost dropped it because it was so hot…from out the back by the fan it was smoldering. So it looks like the Moxi box we had fried itself internally and who knows if it would have caught the house on fire. I honestly don’t know what would have happened if I didn’t go downstairs. Tomorrow Krissy would have gone to work and I may not have gone downstairs until the evening. If that was the case it would have just smoldered for 20 hours.

I called up Charter to let them know and they said maybe Friday they could replace it. They were so unimpressed or worried that the thing caught on fire. I asked if I could take it in myself and they said no problem….I even asked if I could get a new Moxi box and they said no problem. However the last time we swapped our Moxi box they said they were phasing them out and trying to push a much worse solution for a DVR. We will see tomorrow what they say. I wanted to open it up and see how bad the damage is but I am afraid they may dishonor it if I do that. So I will see if they will open it up for me when I take it in. This is enough excitement for one night….I will let you know what happens.

UPDATE: So I took the box in the next day and swapped it out for a different Motorola DVR.  It is a step back from the Moxi but we already had two of them die on us (the first one just stopped working).  It’s too bad because the interface on the Moxi is so much better than the new DVR.  We may switch to a Tivo but they are pretty expensive for the Series III.  The woman at Charter was pretty surprised by the whole story so maybe its the first one up here they have seen??

  1. Love, love, love the customer service at Charter! Wow, what sympathy and concern they show!!
Thank God you went down there PK. After all the work you’ve put into your home, it would have been a shame to watch it go up in flames due to Charters f***ing Moxi box.

  2. I’m very glad you posted this. I’m having the auto-reboot problem. The first time I reported it the tech just said I can send a signal to the box that will help. The second time I called to report another occurance the tech told me about the fire. Since I have so many issue with charter I don’t believe much of what they tell me. It nice to have independent confirmation.

    Thanks for posting.
